==> The Skinny on Skin Tumors     by Mary R. Shefferman
Wriggly as our ferrets may be, it's part of our job as good ferret parents to hold them still long enough to check their skin for any odd lumps, bumps, growths, or bald patches.
Some ferrets are more than happy to get a full-body massage from their favorite human, but others are a little ticklish or just can't bear to be still for more than a few seconds. Whatever type of ferrets you have, you'll want to give them a good once (or twice) over at least every couple of weeks to check for skin tumors. If you bathe your ferrets on a regular basis (say, once a month), that's a great time check for skin tumors. When your ferret's fur is wet, it's easier to see and feel his skin.
The word "tumor" usually evokes fear in the heart of a ferret parent, but be assured that most skin tumors are benign. However, even though the tumors are benign, it is important to have your veterinarian check them out and remove them. For example, mast cell tumors can spread and they can make your ferret very uncomfortable (they release histamines, which cause itching). Often we only notice a mast cell tumor on our ferret because there is a scab where the ferret has been scratching. The sooner you have a mast cell tumor removed, the less likely you are to see more of them appear on your little pal.
You will recognize a skin tumor as a raised bump on the skin; some are the same color as the skin, some are discolored. The bump may have fur on it, but more often there is no fur. If you notice a scab on your ferret, you'll want to take a closer look to see if it is a skin tumor that he has been scratching, and not just the result of rough play with another ferret. If your ferret has a small (approx 1-2 cm) bald patch, take a closer look to see if there might be a small bump there.
A ferret-knowledgeable veterinarian should examine any lump or bump on your ferret. He or she will be able to determine the best course of action. Although most skin tumors are benign, they do need to be removed. Usually, the tumor can be removed under light sedation.
Three of our ferrets had mast cell tumors -- Ralph, Marshmallow, and Knuks. All of them were in and out of the vet's office within the course of an hour. Our vet put the ferrets under isoflurane gas anesthesia and removed the small masses. Our ferrets came out a little groggy, but none the worse for wear. Ralph and Knuks never had another skin tumor, but Marshmallow did. It was only a couple of weeks after the first one had been removed, so we knew right away what it was. After that was removed, he didn't have any more.
So the next time you're petting your ferret, give him a good rubbing all over to check for skin tumors.
:)
