Archives: Title: Ferret Seasonal Shedding Date: October 23, 2001 By: Mary R. SheffermanThe other day I picked up Gabby and she felt a little cushier; her fur felt a little more like a winter coat than it had in the previous days. Sure enough, the next night Eric was petting Balthazar and a cloud of fur billowed off of him. We broke out the hairball remedy and loaded up everyone with a dose of it. Eric brushed Bal and pulled off a small ferret's worth of loose fur. Now Koosh is dropping a few hairs, too. The following night, Balthazar and Koosh got baths to help remove even more of their loose fur. It's always important to keep an eye on whether and when your ferrets shed. Because they all groom one another, if one is shedding all should get hairball remedy (laxative). Any ferret with loose fur should get a good brushing like Bal got; a bath is also a good way to remove loose fur.
Here's something we've discovered -- most ferrets aren't too keen on getting brushed. News flash, right? We started using a thing called a Zoom Groom by Kong a couple of years ago and noticed that the ferrets seem to tolerate it better than a conventional brush. And ferrets really hate those wire slicker brushes, at least all our ferrets hate them. I don't know if they scratch or tickle, but, whatever it is, the ferrets run from it like they run from baths.
So watch your ferrets for loose fur. It's that time.
